Alfred Van Gieson, now Master Sgt., right, a reservist with the 48th Aerial Port Squadron, 624th Regional Support Group, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, and his wife Jenny Van Gieson, come back to shore at Waikiki Beach after a morning session of surfing and paddling in Oahu, Hawaii, Aug 13, 2016. Van Gieson is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a world champion outrigger, or Va'a, paddler and the coach at the Leeward Kai Canoe Club, which was founded by his grandparents.
